The aimEducation that meets the needs of the individual; promoting self-esteem and social responsibility

Inclusion

The vision-

  • To respect the environment & promote issues associated with sustainable development

  • To value the local community & the partners of the project at equal levels

  • To encourage individuality, teamwork & creativity

  • To develop and promote learning through the 14-19 Curriculum

Educational Programmes - The Quarry Lifecycle Programme is a series of workshops and activities aimed at local schools. Beginning in winter with a tree planting scheme, followed in late spring by our garden detectives workshops.

We achieve our vision through engaging children and young adults in restoration & education projects around Borras quarry.

Our educational projects such as ‘tree planting schemes, Garden Detective programme and Creature Quest help us to increase the biodiversity and monitor the amount of new wildlife species on the quarry; whilst helping individuals appreciate the environment as a source of inspiration.

The larger restoration projects like ‘St. Christopher’s Community Woodland’ and Lagoon 2A restoration are helping us develop good community advocates; young citizens who respect and value both human diversity and the need for individual social responsibility.

Promoting Sustainable Development is instrumental to our approach. DfES (Department for Education and Skills) definition of sustainable development and the guideline principle adopted by the Centre staff is:-

"The goal of sustainable development is to enable all people throughout the world to satisfy their basic needs and enjoy a better quality of life; without compromising the quality of life of future generations."

All our projects aim to challenge people, directly or indirectly on the importance of local and global citizenship. Using our environment as a learning vehicle, we’ve help empower young people to develop community advocacy and awareness of the impact their living/lifestyle choices have on future generations.

Dealing with disaffected students - Over the years we have provided work experience placements to students who are struggling in the school setting. These pupils are, for different reasons not attending their school, or are being disruptive in class.  When students are referred to we often find that our small project, are able to offer the change in learning environment that promotes and develops an opportunity to learn practical skills.

All students who attend the Centre, whether for work experience placements, or full time become part of our accreditation scheme, through the 'Open College Network'. These young people are working toward entry/ foundation level grades in a variety of practical skill based learning.
